KATHMANDU – In a powerful demonstration of youth leadership and community action, a dynamic environmental initiative marking Earth Day 2026 was successfully carried out at Madan Bhandari Park, Ward No. 13 of Chandragiri Municipality.
Aligned with the global campaign led by EARTHDAY.ORG, the program brought the theme “Our Power, Our Planet” to life through meaningful grassroots engagement in Nepal.
The initiative was spearheaded by Kamal Pokhrel, Youth Ambassador of My Future My Voice (MFMV) and Lead Member of GPCorps South Asia, who mobilized a diverse coalition of young leaders, community members, and local authorities under a shared commitment to environmental sustainability.
Global Vision, Local Impact
As part of one of the world’s largest environmental movements spanning more than 190 countries, the Chandragiri initiative highlighted how local actions can contribute to global climate solutions.
A total of 56 saplings—including Guava, Indian Gooseberry, Balsam, and Indian Bay Leaf—were planted across the park. These species were carefully selected for their ecological benefits and relevance to the local community.
What set this effort apart was a strong emphasis on sustainability beyond the event. Participants took personal responsibility for the trees they planted, pledging long-term care and protection—turning a one-day campaign into an ongoing environmental commitment.
Cleanliness Drive Amplifies Impact
Complementing the plantation activity, a large-scale cleanliness drive was conducted within the park premises. The effort resulted in the collection of 38.9 kilograms of waste, reinforcing the urgent need for responsible waste management and cleaner public spaces.
Collaboration Between Youth and Local Government
The program was honored by the presence of Ward Chairperson Mr. Shreekrishna Khatri as Chief Guest. Chandragiri Municipality Ward No. 13 played a key role in coordinating and supporting the initiative, recognizing it as a vital step toward fostering a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable community.
Strong Network of Youth Organizations
The initiative saw active participation from multiple youth-led organizations. It was co-organized by the Leo Club of Kathmandu Laligurans and Rotaract Club of Bharatpur, with support from Youth for Good Nepal, GPCorps, Knowphile Social, Nepal Youth Games, Leo Club of KTM Indra Annapurna, and Avantar.
This event builds on a series of ongoing environmental programs, including waste segregation awareness campaigns, dustbin distribution, and community-based training initiatives.
A Message for the Future
Speaking on the occasion, Kamal Pokhrel shared a powerful reflection:
“Plants are among the most effective ways to restore and strengthen our environment. When we care for the Earth, it gives back to us. This planet is a shared home for all living beings—humans, animals, and plants—and only through collective responsibility can we ensure a healthier, sustainable future.”
Moving Forward
The Chandragiri Earth Day initiative stands as a compelling example of how global environmental movements can translate into impactful local action.
Driven by youth energy and community collaboration, it sends a clear message: meaningful change begins at the grassroots.
With renewed commitment and growing participation, such initiatives are paving the way toward a greener and more resilient future for Nepal.
