Young Voices, Green Choices: Kamal Pokhrel Ignites Earth Day Action in Chandragiri Ward-13

KATHMANDU, April 20, 2026 – On the eve of Earth Day (April 22), the Community Environmental Action Program 2026 successfully launched its first phase – a Waste Segregation and Awareness Training – today at Chandragiri Municipality Ward No. 13.

The initiative was coordinated by Kamal Pokhrel, My Future My Voice (MFMV) Youth Ambassador and Lead Member of GPCorps South Asia Hub, with a clear vision: drive environmental change from the grassroots up.

The program is supported by and part of the official EARTHDAY.ORG Asia – the global organization that has led Earth Day since 1970, engaging over 150,000 organizations across 190+ countries.

Co-organized by Leo Club of Kathmandu Laligurans and Rotaract Club of Bharatpur, the event also received support from Youth for Good Nepal, GPCorps South Asia Hub, Knowphile Social, Nepal Youth Games, Leo Club of KTM Indra Annapurna, and Avantar.

Grand Support from Chandragiri Municipality

The program was further strengthened by the grand support of Chandragiri Municipality, which actively collaborated to ensure the event’s success.

The municipality’s facilitation, encouragement, and logistical backing played a key role in reaching local households, especially families with disabilities.

The organizing team expressed special gratitude to Chandragiri Municipality for its unwavering partnership. Program Coordinator Kamal Pokhrel stated:

“We are deeply thankful to Chandragiri Municipality for their grand support. Their belief in community-led environmental action made this initiative more impactful and far-reaching.”

From Awareness to Action: “Our Power, Our Planet”

Aligning with this year’s global Earth Day theme – “Our Power, Our Planet” – the Community Environmental Action Program 2026 focuses on waste management, reforestation, and river conservation.

Today’s event combined practical training with on‑spot implementation, with special outreach to families with disabilities in the ward.

Thanks to sponsorship from Earth Day Network, a total of 15 sets of dustbins (30 units: 15 organic, 15 inorganic) were distributed to participating households to encourage waste segregation at the source. An additional set was handed over to the ward office, marking the beginning of a sustained, model initiative.

Door‑to‑door monitoring and follow‑up support will ensure long‑term impact.

Expert Insights & Community Leadership

During the training, Srijana Sitikhu – Environmental Peacebuilding Lead at GPF Nepal – demonstrated composting techniques, explained the benefits of greening homes, and showed how organic waste can be turned into valuable resources. Srijana Shrestha from Grevolution shared real‑life success stories, emphasizing the practical difference that waste segregation makes in daily life.

Chief Guest Mr. Shreekrishna Khatri, Ward Chairperson of Chandragiri Municipality Ward No. 13, inspired the community by saying:

“Waste is not a problem – it is an economic opportunity. We must learn to see it as a resource.”

Youth-Led Change for a Greener Future

Local residents and representatives responded with enthusiasm, praising the blend of knowledge and immediate action. One participant said:

“This program gave us both understanding and the tools to act – right away. That’s what we need more of.”

What’s Next? Plantation & River Cleanup – April 25

As part of the ongoing campaign, two major activities are already scheduled for April 25, 2026:

· Tree plantation at Madan Bhandari Park, Chandragiri Municipality Ward No. 13

· River cleanup at Devghat Parisar, Chitwan

With active participation from local communities, youth clubs, civil society, and the strong backing of Chandragiri Municipality, the Community Environmental Action Program 2026 is set to become a model for sustainable, people‑led environmental action in Nepal.
